A man allegedly chased and stabbed his housemate with a kitchen carving knife after they had an argument.

Norman Mac faced Burwood Local Court on Tuesday from custody and applied for bail after being charged with wounding a person to cause grievous bodily harm. He has not entered a plea.

Court documents state the 38-year-old was living in a Norman St, Auburn share house when the alleged attack took place about 6.50am on March 31.

Magistrate Jennifer Price read from the police facts, telling the court Mac allegedly went into the kitchen and armed himself with a carving knife after he and his housemate had an argument.

Mac allegedly “slashed” at the man’s head causing several cuts and tried to stab him in the chest, the court heard.

The complainant tried to run when Mac allegedly stabbed him in the back, narrowly missing his spine, and used so much force he broke the knife handle.

The court heard Mac allegedly made admissions to police.

Ms Price said the facts were “concerning” as there was an opportunity for Mac to discontinue the alleged attack but he chose to allegedly chase the complainant and stab him in the back.

Mac’s lawyer Vincent Coory said a self-defence argument may arise and his client could comply with bail conditions as he had no criminal history.

The accused was supported by his parents at court and Mac drove his mother, who has stage two lung cancer, to medical appointments, Mr Coory said.

Ms Price refused the bail application and the case was adjourned to May.
