The Newtown Festival program was launched today under the banner; “By the people, for the people”.

The 41st annual Newtown Festival, at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park on November 12, will keep true to the festival motto of celebrating all things weird and wonderful.

Liz Yeo, CEO of Newtown Neighbourhood Centre said the Newtown Festival brings the community together to indulge in a full day of music, art, markets, food, four-legged friends and fun.

“The theme this year is ‘by the people, for the people’,” Ms Yeo said at the launch at the Courthouse Hotel in Newtown.

“It is a very appropriate them for Newtown Festival given that this festival is only possible because of the generosity of all the artists, performers and the people who give their time and energy and creativity to make this such a fantastic event.”

She said this year’s festival had something for everyone; the popular dog show is back with Sassy Treats, new this year is the EDGE IRL (in real life) talks tent, and former Wiggle and Murray Cook, a Newtown resident who was at the launch, will be performing at the Newtown Festival first time.

“Living in the inner west, specifically, Newtown has been a massive part of my adult life,” Cook said. “From share houses in Australia St through the 1980s, to finally ending up as close to the Enmore Theatre as any live-music- loving-noise attracted resident would want to be, I honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else,” Cook, who will perform on the main stage with his band The Soul Movers, said.

The entertainment line-up also includes Delta Riggs who join a big list of emerging and established artists, all from the inner west.

The Eco Village will be at the heart of Newtown Festival this year, setting up its new home among the trees in the centre of the festivities.

Curated by the Sydney Sustainability Centre, there Eco Village will help us raise awareness of important global issues and there will be workshops to educate us as to how we can all make small changes to protect our environment. There will also be an on-site worm farm, munching through as much waste as possible right before your eyes. The wriggly worms will help reduce the festival’s total waste and will provide natural fuel for other good stuff to grow.

For a contribution of $5 at the entry gates, festival attendees can feel great about supporting the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) and those doing it tough in the inner west.

Ms Yeo said: “We are really excited about the diverse line up of talented inner westies who will be performing at this year’s Newtown Festival. Their generosity is what makes this festival our Newtown Festival. It is their support, along with your generosity at the festival gates, which enables Newtown Neighbourhood Centre to continue providing frontline programs and services for people doing it most tough in the inner west.”
