Sydney’s newest fresh food farmers’ market kicks off in Summer Hill on Sunday.
A collaboration with NSW Bespoke Markets, the operator of the Erskineville Farmers’ Market, the new Flour Mill Markets will be held in the forecourt of the heritage Mungo Scott building in the Flour Mill of Summer Hill precinct at 18 Flour Mill Way, Summer Hill from 9am to 1pm.
With a focus on sustainable and environmentally grown produce, the market will showcase the produce of farmers, producers and artisan makers as a healthy alternative to supermarket shopping. It will also be a plastic-free zone with take-away coffees provided in biodegradable cups, or a significant discount provided to those bringing their own keep-cups.
EG Development director Grant Flannigan said: “We are passionate about bringing life and energy to the Flour Mill of Summer Hill community and eager to see the beautiful Mungo Scott building opened to the community. The Flour Mill Markets will be the latest of these temporary activations and we are very excited to see this beautiful precinct serving the needs of the broader community”.
Vendors will include organic produce from the Blue Mountains’ Hartley Harvest, a world of cheese from the Grate Cheese Co, single-origin coffee from the Hugo’s Coffee Cartel, French fair from Pastries de Paris, fresh bread from Brickfields, as well as fresh flowers, small goods, pottery and more from a host of other vendors.
With limited street parking available, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the Lewisham West light rail station literally on Mungo Scott’s doorstep, or the Summer Hill and Lewisham train stations, which are both just a five-minute walk away.
NSW Bespoke Markets director Andrew Chesterton said: “Summer Hill is one of the most vibrant suburbs in the inner west and we look forward to bringing our small-scale farmer’s market concept to one of the area’s most iconic buildings - Mungo Scott - at the flour mill”.
First opened in 1922 by Australian flour millers Mungo Scott, the building was used as a processing facility for wheat grown around NSW until 2009. It then stood vacant for nearly a decade after the last operators, Allied Mills, vacated the site.
The building is now a 2.4ha, $340 million masterplanned community The Flour Mill of Summer Hill, which has revitalised the former industrial site with the construction of 360 contemporary apartments and terraces, across 11 separate buildings, set around a central plaza and community park.
