One of the members of Abuzar Sultani’s murder squad, who is already serving a lengthy jail sentence over his role in the death of a mafia figure, will soon be sentenced for threatening a lawyer.
Mirwais Danishyar, 31, appeared via videolink at Downing Centre District Court in Monday after previously pleading guilty to two counts of drug supply and two counts of threatening a justice official.
It was previously reported Danishyar threatened a Crown prosecutor and an instructing solicitor when he was standing trial for the murder of underworld figure Pasquale Barbaro.
The matter was adjourned for sentence on June 28.
Danishyar, along with Siar Munshizada and Joshua Baines, was part of a sophisticated crew known as “the Afghanis” or “Murder Crew 13” controlled by Abuzar Sultani, a university student who earlier this year pleaded guilty to his fifth murder and who was described by a Supreme Court judge as having a “deep gratification for killing others”.
Last year, Danishyar, who was previously sentenced to 15 years behind bars for his role as the getaway driver in the murder of Mr Barbaro, sought to have his conviction overturned.
He claimed he did not know there was an execution plot and only thought Mr Barbaro would be “bashed”. His appeal was unsuccessful.
Mr Barbaro was gunned down in November 2016 outside an Earlwood home.
In CCTV footage of what a court previously heard was “a cold blooded execution-type shooting”, Mr Barbaro can be seen running for his life after he was ambushed on a suburban Earlwood street.
In 2021, when Danishyar was initially sentenced, Justice Desmond Fagan said his role as the getaway driver in the murder plot was “important” because “without a getaway driver the scheme would not work”.
On June 26, Danishyar is also due to be sentenced in the district court on a separate charge of unlawfully disposing of a corpse.
