Two apartments inside the renovated nurses quarters of the former Marrickville hospital have each sold for $2.5 million.
Fashion designer Garth Fleeton and his partner had splashed out on the top-floor apartment before going “all-in” on historic Lilydale House as an investment property.
“I actually think they are both worth more than what we paid,” Mr Fleeton said as he gave the Courier an exclusive look inside the two three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments.
“With the first one, a lady was actually considering it and she was umming and ahhing about buying it. The sellers then said if we wanted to put a deposit down on it, it’s ours — so we did.
“And later, we checked out the bottom one and the same lady was umming and ahhing again about whether to buy it. And then the same thing happened and we put a deposit down on it and we ended up with the whole house.”
He said all of the original windows were removed, repaired and reinstalled on the house, where the 92-year-old hospital was located before it closed in 1991.
“What you see now is totally true to the original design — and even the stain-glass windows have been brought back to life,” Mr Fleeton said.
“The staircase going up to the top apartment is the original one and in pristine condition. And the redone high ceilings really make the place.”
Lilydale House is the jewel in the crown of Mirvac’s new Marrick & Co development, which includes 225 apartments and terraces.
It sits alongside the $40 million Marrickville Library and community centre, where recent ghost sightings spiced up last week’s official unveiling.
Mr Fleeton said he had not witnessed any paranormal activity at Lilydale House, which sits adjacent to a former hospital wing where there have been recent ghost sightings.
“No, it has the most beautiful energy inside both apartments. There’s a real feeling of love,” he said.
“Of course, there would be ghosts there, because it was an emergency ward before it became the nurses quarters.
“I haven’t seen a ghost, but there’s definitely a feeling of motherly love from all the wonderful nurses who have stayed and worked there.”
Mr Fleeton and his partner will rent out each apartment for $1400 a week from late October.
Raine & Horne Marrickville is taking rental inquiries for the apartments.
