Mal Seve: Inner West Brotherhood member’s prison punch

A gang member jailed over a wild brawl with OneFour members is facing more time in prison for a coward punch behind bars that has left another inmate needing surgery.

What happens when you are charged with a crime?

An Inner West Brotherhood gangster allegedly bashed another prisoner behind bars so badly he needed teeth removed and a metal plate in his face.

Mal Seve, 23, is alleged to have left the older inmate with graphic injuries after what a court heard was a “cowardly” attack from behind inside Parklea Correctional Centre.

Seve was behind bars at the time serving out a sentence for a brawl between Inner West and OneFour gang members in 2019 when he landed the single vicious blow.

His lawyer Chris Hammond told the District Court on Friday that Seve – a father of two – was disciplined in jail with no visitors allowed for three months and again for “intimidation” inside the jail in June.

“To have accumulated that record of violence clearly there is something wrong,” Mr Hammond said.

“He’s had very little by way of psychological assistance. Yes he has seen a psychologist … but he saw a psychologist in school but his family couldn’t afford to pay for it.

“In my submission that is significant. While he has had opportunities and he has not taken those opportunities he does really need ongoing psychological assistance.”

Court records show Seve has been charged with one count robbery in company causing wounding – grievous bodily harm.

The inmate who copped the blow, the court heard, is significantly older than Seve and was unable to defend himself from the attack.

“(Seve) is a strong young man, he struck the victim from behind to right side of chin,” Judge Penny Hock said.

“He wasn’t even in a position to defend himself, it’s a very cowardly act by a very young man.”

Seve was handed a two-year jail term in 2020 for his role in a wild brawl that erupted between Inner West Brother Hood and OneFour members where two men were stabbed and another ran down by a car.

Up to 20 men were involved in the brawl between the warring gangs outside the Mt Druitt Village Hotel, wielding knives, golf clubs and pool cues as weapons.

While Seve’s role was described as lesser than that of several others because he was unarmed, OneFour rapper Lekks was hit by a car driven by one of his mates in the chaos.

Mr Hammond said Seve, before the jail bashing, had been on a bad path with drugs and alcohol being consumed from the age of 13.

Seve, sporting a shaved head and long mullet, sat quietly in the maximum security section of Parklea Jail where he was being beamed into court from.

His case will return back to the same court later this year where he will be sentenced by Judge Hock.
