Sydney designer Anna Quan has delivered lashings of old world Hollywood charm, inspired by movie star Katherine Hepburn, to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW).
Quan said the four-time Oscar winner, who was a leading lady in Hollywood for more than 60 years and a pioneering role model for women right up until her death in 2003, was the inspiration behind her Turn The Page resort collection.
“Katharine Hepburn plays muse as the collection combines both powerful, structured tailoring and elegant dropped waist detailing for evening wear,” Quan said.
Quan gained international headlines early in her career when model Kendall Jenner wore an Anna Quan jumpsuit to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s lavish pre-wedding luncheon, hosted by Valentino Garavani.
For Quan it was incredible exposure, with Jenner posting a photo in the Tommy jumpsuit on Instagram to her 10 million-plus followers.
“I’ve been very fortunate early on that my clothes were picked up from a Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia video on YouTube by Kendall’s stylist,” Quan said.
Her latest collection draws on 1930’s long-line silhouettes and graceful ease.
The range includes classic chocolate suiting, taupe shirting and luxurious gunmetal satin acetate dresses.
Quan’s partiality to stripes and man-sized shirting is back but the collection features twisted knot features that hark back to the 1930s, along with shirring details that add an element of interest, distortion and texture.
Quan’s niche is minimalism meets understated luxury. She said these timeless investment pieces were designed to out last seasonal trends and provide the basis of the current “capsule wardrobe” movement.
