The woman behind a horror case of neglect which shocked readers last week can be revealed as Kelly Smith, from Lilyfield.
Smith, pictured, last week lost an appeal against her criminal convictions for neglecting her dog so badly it needed to be put down while she was on a four-day cruise.
The case came to light last week after the RSPCA found the pooch, named JayZ, in her unit so badly injured he was dragging his legs behind him and had a 35cm wound so deep it was exposing bone.
The inner west woman had said that she used a spray and bandage to cover the wound and had left JayZ in the care of her mother while she went on the cruise.
The vet who treated him found the injuries so severe that it would have been cruel to keep him alive and euthanised the black and white Maltese cross Jack Russell terrier.
Among the injuries were a dried and swollen penis, muscle loss in both rear legs and periodontal disease.
The same RSPCA vet found the pooch had needed treatment for a number of health conditions weeks before authorities were alerted to JayZ’s condition.
Documents from the Downing Centre District Court reveal Smith, a grandmother and mum-of-four, had withdrawn her appeal against her August convictions from the Local Court.
Judge Jane Culver upheld her punishment of a 10 month intensive corrections order, 75 hours of community service and a five-year ban from owning a dog.
