An inner city suburb could soon replicate the Hollywood walk of fame, in a bid to revive deserted town centres.
A $7.5 million revitalisation plan, revealed by Inner West Council, hopes to return glory to the once “famous” restaurant, cafe and night-life scene of the Inner West, with six main streets set to be injected with new life.
The program is set to feature a widescale “plaque program” along Enmore Rd, which will feature the names of the best performances at the historic Enmore Theatre.
Famous performances at the iconic theatre include The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Cranberries, Icehouse and Coldplay.
The project looks to bring back “colour” through investments to street furniture, artworks, decorations and infrastructure across Rozelle, Marrickville, Enmore, Newtown, and Balmain, with $1.5 million injected to each town centre for revitalisation works.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said he hoped the projects would help “reawaken” deserted streets across the inner west.
“We want people back in the shops, we want restaurants and pubs to be full and we want the colour and movement that the inner west is famous for,” he said.
“Our whole community did it tough during lockdowns, our businesses took a hit and at times the streets were almost deserted.
“Now is the time for a reawakening, we want people back in the shops and to show what makes the Inner West such an attractive place to live and work.”
Another plaques program is set to be rolled out in Balmain, which will feature a heritage pub trail.
Set to be finished in 2025, the revitalisation will see up to 43 projects with short term improvements on artwork, bins, fairy lights on trees, perfect match murals and planting works.
Projects are also being looked at in the long term such as, expanding footpaths and making laneways attractive.
