A man has been charged with pushing another commuter onto the tracks at an inner Sydney train station in what police believe was a random attack.

A man has been charged with pushing another man onto the tracks at Newtown train station in a seemingly random attack, leaving him unconscious and with spinal injuries.

Ben McAllister faced Newtown Local Court from custody on Friday where he was refused bail after being charged with causing grievous bodily harm, to which he is yet to enter a plea.

Emergency services were called to Newtown Railway Station about 9.30am on July 7 after receiving reports a man was allegedly assaulted on a platform and knocked unconscious onto the tracks.

The 65-year-old man suffered spinal injuries and was taken off the tracks by paramedics and taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment.

Police from the Inner West Police Area Command investigated the incident and raided McAllister’s Gower St, Summer Hill home where the 45-year-old was arrested.

McAllister was charged at Newtown Police Station and police believe the men did not know each other.

His case has been adjourned to September 5.
