A young man has been charged after he was allegedly busted writing offensive language on a 100-year-old Illawarra war memorial.
About 7.30pm on Monday, police were called to a surf club on Lawrence Hargrave Dr, Austinmer in Wollongong, following reports a person was graffitiing on the war memorial.
The memorial was first established in North Wollongong in 1922 to remember those in the Illawarra who fought and were killed in the First World War.
Officers attended the scene of the memorial and arrested a 24-year-old man.
Police also allege the man graffitied pillars of the surf life saving clubhouse, side of the lifeguard tower and a council drinking fountain.
He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with wilfully damage or deface any protected place and destroy or damage property.
The 24-year-old was granted conditional bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, April 9.
