Mittagong: Man charged after three-car crash on Hume highway

A truck driver has been charged for negligent and dangerous driving allegedly causing a multiple vehicle crash on the Hume Highway in Sydney’s southwest.

A man has been charged for negligent and dangerous driving allegedly resulting in a multiple vehicle crash on the Hume Highway near Mittagong. Following a single-car crash less than an hour earlier on the same road.

Police closed a southbound lane on the highway near Drapers Rd in Willowvale around 11:15am to clear a single-car crash, but while diverting traffic a second crash occurred between a truck, hatchback and station-wagon around midday.

The impact of the truck crash allegedly forced a hatchback into the back of a station-wagon situated in front of them.

NSW Rural Fire Service said a 69-year-old Cootamundra woman who was the front seat passenger in the hatchback car, was found lying on the road at the site of the crash.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene for chest injuries, before airlifting her to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition.

The 69-year-old man driving the hatchback, was treated for head injuries before NSW Ambulance transported him to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition, for treatment and mandatory testing.

Paramedics also assessed two passengers in the station-wagon but reported no injuries.

The truck crash resulted in a ruptured fuel tank which required four RFS firefighters to remain on the site to prevent any fires from erupting until the cars were towed away at 6pm.

Police arrested a 55-year-old man driving the truck, and transported him to Bowral Hospital with no injuries for mandatory testing.

He was charged for dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and causing bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle.

The man was granted conditional bail and will appear at Moss Vale Local Court on Tuesday April 16.
