Sean Williams smashed into car while drunk before lashing out at cop

A young man’s night out drinking shots with mates took a turn for the worse, only ending after he started swaying on his feet and falling asleep at the local police station.

A young bartender has been reprimanded for his “cowardly” drunken behaviour, after he drove drunk, smashed into another car and assaulted a cop.

Sean Williams, 21, was slammed by magistrate Darryl Pearce at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, after a series of drunken crimes landed him in the hands of the law.

The court heard the 21-year-old was charged with not give particulars to other driver, low-range drink driving, assault police and resist or hinder police on November 19, after he spent the night drinking beers and shots at Towradgi Beach Hotel with his mates.

It was around 3.30am when Williams crashed his Subaru Forester into a parked Ford Ranger on Julius Street, Towradgi.

The crash caused significant damage to Williams’s car, as well as the Ford, which was forced up onto the kerb.

While Williams drove off after hitting the vehicle, the owner heard the smash, and went outside to investigate, noticing debris wedged in his bulbar and all over the road.

The owner contacted police, who found Williams trying to flee his car a short time later, the court heard.

Court documents reveal as police approached, Williams sat in the passenger seat, keys in hand, before police noticed he was slurring and appeared drunk.

He returned a positive roadside breath test, and as police tried to arrest him, a struggle ensued.

He told police he’d had four or five drinks, being beers and shots, at Towradgi Beach Hotel between 6pm and 3am.

He returned a low-range result of 0.077 at Wollongong police station.

While at the station, the court heard Williams became aggressive, and was restrained, before he kicked an officer and tried to headbutt him.

The court also heard Williams’s condition deteriorated while at the station, and that he was constantly falling asleep, swaying and falling over.

In court on Tuesday, his defence lawyer Matt Ward told the court his client was suffering from mental health issues at the time and had made a bad decision, and that coming to court had had a “very big impact” on his client.

However, Magistrate Pearce rejected it was a “bad decision” saying it was “a lot more than that”.

“He knew what he was doing when he drank and drove,” he said. “This whole set of circumstances is serious.

“You (Williams) drank too much and cowardly you tried to get away from police.”

He agreed alcohol exacerbated Williams’s behaviour on the night but said a conviction had to be recorded.

Williams was disqualified from driving for six months, placed on a 12-month community corrections order and ordered to pay $2500 in fines.
