Three Illawarra teens have been jailed after they took off with weed, a Gucci bag and a Louis Vuitton glasses case following a daylight home invasion, while a fourth was spared prison time.
The four men, Tyson Komainadravusa, Cayden Collis, Vettori Dargin and Justin Hanslow faced the NSW District Court for sentencing on Friday, after pleading guilty to the charge of robbery in company.
Komainadravusa, Dargin and Hanslow were jailed for two years and six months with a non-parole period of one year, with the court hearing drug dependency and cash were motivators for some of the men, with the offending labelled as “amateurish behaviour”.
Collis on the other hand escaped full time jail, after he was sentenced to two year and six month intensive corrections order.
In sparing Collis jail time, Judge Blackmore said he probably wouldn’t have been involved in the incident if he weren’t influenced by Komainadravusa.
“He is remorseful and has good prospects of rehabilitation,” Judge Blamore said.
“He is a person of prior good character with no past convictions.”
The court heard that on July 27 last year, Komainadravusa enlisted the help of his mate Dargin, asking him if he was keen to “maybe make a little money”. After Dargin asked for more details Komainadravusa told him they planned to rob a home, “there's meant to be 2-3 pounds (of marijuana),” he told Dargin in a text message. “We were asked to get a gaming laptop and playstation and s**t… and we will get paid for it”.
In the documents, it was alleged Collis and Komainadravusa then picked up Dargin in Collis’ Holden Astra, before they also picked up Dargin’s mate Hanslow.
Police allege the teens then headed to a St George Avenue home in Figtree, just before 3pm, covering their faces with balaclavas and clothing before entering the home through the garage.
Court documents state Komainadravusa was armed with a knife, while Collis was allegedly holding a baseball bat and Dargin a kitchen knife.
The foursome entered to find the victim with four of his mates, with Komainadravusa grabbing the victim by the collar of his jumper and pushing him into bedroom.
Once in the bedroom, court documents state Komainadravusa ran his fingers through the victim’s mullet saying “this is nice, I like this.”
But the pleasantries didn’t last, with Komainadravusa demanding “where’s all the s**t. I be hearing you got all the s**t, where's it all at”.
As he held the victim in the bedroom, the other three men began ransacking the area, stuffing $900 worth of marijuana, an x-box, a Gucci bag and a Louis Vuitton glasses case into a duffle bag.
In the documents, police allege Komainadravusa grabbed the victim by the neck and held a knife toward him as he pushed him into his bedroom.
Meanwhile, one of the witnesses began filming the attackers, before one of the men allegedly held a machete to the victim’s throat .
The invasion only stopped when the victim’s brother walked downstairs and noticed the attackers, urging his mum to contact police.
The group allegedly took off in Collis’s car after Dargin punched the victim in the face.
The foursome were arrested in the following days, with Komainadruavasa found in possession of the victim’s X-box, and Gucci bag.
Hanslow and Dargin were already on remand and will be eligible for release to parole in September and August respectively.
Komainadravusa was on bail until today, and hugged his grandmother who burst into tears as he was led away. He will be eligible for release in May next year.
