An Illawarra father-of-six previously convicted of a domestic violence offence has been released on bail after allegedly breaching an AVO, pushing his ex-partner to the floor and choking her.
Ronald Kelly, 32, appeared in Bail Court on Tuesday, charged with common assault and breaching an AVO. He is yet to enter pleas.
Kelly was arrested on July 13 at his Illawarra house after his ex-partner allegedly came to the home and “began screaming”.
The court heard Kelly allegedly pushed the woman to the ground and began choking her.
Police were later called to the scene and Kelly was arrested.
He was charged and initially refused bail due to the alleged assault breaching an AVO placed on the woman following a 2019 offence where his ex – among two others – was a victim.
The 2019 offence was dealt with in court with Kelly charged with common assault and reckless wounding.
He was sentenced to a community corrections order, which the court heard he remained on when the alleged offending took place in July.
While the prosecution opposed bail due to Kelly’s history and the alleged offending breaching an AVO, Kelly’s lawyer urged Magistrate Daniel Covington to grant the release application, submitting her client was “changing his ways”.
She also said he was trying to be a better father for his six children, and told the court the alleged offending occurred in his home after his ex allegedly visited.
Mr Covington granted bail on the condition Kelly continued to adhere to AVO orders.
His case will be mentioned in Port Kembla Local Court on July 31.
