A disgraced junior Illawarra basketball coach has avoided being sent to jail for coercing two underage girls into exchanging lewd pictures on Snapchat.

Jaydon Beveridge, the son of highly-regarded former NBL coach Rob Beveridge, didn’t respond to the media as he left Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday after being hit with a three-year community corrections order after previously pleading guilty to inciting a person under 16 to commit an act of indecency and intentionally inciting a child older than 10 and under 16 years to carry out a sexual act.

The 24-year-old was also ordered to complete 750 hours of community service for his vile behaviour which stems to between 2017 and 2019 when he was in a “position of authority” with the Illawarra Basketball Association.

Magistrate Michael Ong said the case involving girls who were aged 14 and 16 as “serious offending” of an ”overtly sexual nature” which he characterised as “highly disturbing”.

The magistrate said the victim’s impact statement was “highly illustrative” of the effects Beveridge’s offending had, with one of the girls saying it had left her struggling with “social relationships” and having “issues with body image”.

The court had previously heard about a psychological report noting comments from Beveridge’s mother, Suzy Ellen, suggesting this type of behaviour has been “culturally normalised” and was “rife in the community”.

After the sentencing NewsLocal were permitted access to the court documents for the first time which divulged the now-traffic controller’s shameful actions.

Beverage went by the username “Bevo07” on Snapchat when he sent a girl who was aged between 14 and 16 a friend request in the first half of 2017 with the illegal conduct spanning around 15 months.

Beveridge would send the minor messages such as “Morning sunshine” along with love heart emoji before starting to request pictures from her.

The court documents said she didn’t send pictures initially, but gave into Beveridge’s pressure with the “degree of nudity increasing as time went on”.

On one occasion, Beveridge sent naked pictures of himself to the victim including one of his erect penis with the caption “Show me more”.

She obliged with Beveridge responding with a Snap of him masturbating.

In the days following, there was another exchange which concluded with Beveridge sending the girl a video of him ejaculating in his bathroom.

Regular contact stopped at one point in 2018, however, Beverage continued to send the victim “general messages”.

The second victim was also between the ages of 14 and 16 when Beveridge added her on Snapchat in 2019.

Beveridge would refer to her as a “sunshine” and ”princess” and started asking her to send “cheeky pics” which made the victim uncomfortable.

“What are you wearing,” Beveridge said on one occasion with the girl sending him a picture in a bra and pants which he replied ”nice”.

In early 2020, the second victim blocked Beveridge on Snapchat.

In mid 2020, NSW Basketball conducted an investigation into formal complaints received about Beveridge who told them his actions were “inappropriate” and that he had deleted anyone under the age of 18 from his social media.

Beveridge, who is now a traffic controller, also told investigators he “regretted” what he had done while describing it as a ”wake-up call to conduct himself a lot more maturely”.

Detectives from the Wollongong Police District executed a search warrant on the then 21-year-old’s home where they seized electronic devices for forensic examination and soon after he was arrested at Wollongong Command.

In addition to the CCO which will expire in October, 2025, the court also enforced an apprehended personal violence order between Beveridge and the two victims, preventing him from contacting them.
