Editor's Note: In September 2021, Mr Pavric was found not guilty after appealing to the District Court of NSW. Judge Penelope Wass found that the complainant was at times "unconvincing" and "unreliable". Judge Wass also found that the images sent by the complainant were not "intimate images".

One of the first people charged under New South Wales’ revenge porn laws faced Wollongong Local Court for hearing on Monday, after allegedly threatening to publish naked photos of a teen girl unless she agreed to perform sexual acts on him.

Jarrad Pavric, the son of a serving Illawarra police officer, was charged with two counts of threatening to distribute intimate content without consent, intentionally distributing images without consent and procuring a child for unlawful sexual activity in September 2017.

It is alleged he elicited sexual photos from a girl, 14, and threatened to release them unless she performed sex acts on him.

The 22-year-old, who has plead not guilty to the allegations, was supported by his family at Wollongong Local Court on Monday, where day two of an expected four-day hearing explored the contents of Snapchat exchanges between Pavric and the teen girl.

The revenge porn laws came into effect in August 2017, just over a month before Pavric was charged, and carry a penalty of up to three years behind bars and an $11,000 fine.

Police allege a few days before his 2017 arrest, Pavric got the young girl to send him intimate pictures of herself via the social media app Snapchat.

It is then alleged he threatened to publish them online if she did not perform sexual acts on him.

When she refused, Pavric allegedly told her he would delete them if she came to his Horsley home and performed the lewd acts.

In the days following, Pavric allegedly sent two of the pictures to another person, telling them he was thinking of posting them to Instagram.

Police were informed, and they began an investigation, arresting Pavric and seizing computers, mobile phones and electronic equipment from his Horsley home.

During the hearing on Monday, The Crown and Defence questioned police witnesses on how data and photos were extracted from Pavric’s phone.

The Crown’s case is that Pavric used Snapchat account ‘jazza97mate’ to contact the girl, while the defence argues that Pavric was not the author of the messages.

While on the stand, Detective Senior Constable Patrick Mortimer told the court Pavric willingly handed his phone and passcode over to police following his arrest, and that extraction material showed pictures of the victim were found on the device.

The hearing was adjourned early on Monday afternoon and is expected to continue for another two days.
