Police raised concerns after Mr Adamson, 63, left his Day St address at 5pm on Monday and was seen more than 8km away walking along Sandpiper Cl, Albion Park Rail, three hours later.
The final sighting of Mr Adamson was at Warilla Grove at around 7am on Tuesday where he was wearing a grey T-shirt, grey shorts, one black shoe and glasses with a lens missing.
Police and SES members began an extensive search for Mr Adamson which included a search of the Lake Illawarra foreshore near Albion Park Rail, the use of a PolAir helicopter and a geo-targeting message.
On Wednesday, just before 9.30am, Mr Adamson was located in a drain on Airport Rd, Albion Park Rail, by a passer-by walking their dog.
They dialed triple-0 with two paramedic crews dispatched to the scene where they assessed the man for cuts, bruises and hypothermia before transporting him to Wollongong Hospital in a serious condition.
“When we arrived it was clear this patient had spent some time exposed to the elements and was in a hypothermic state,” Inspector Matthew Stirling from NSW Ambulance said.
“He had suffered several cuts and bruises and appeared disoriented.
“Paramedics worked to stabilise the patient before transporting him to Wollongong hospital for further treatment”
