A Southern Region police officer has been charged after allegedly crashing while driving nearly four times above the legal limit while off duty.

Police will allege the 50-year-old female police officer crashed her car on Memorial Dr, Bellambi, while travelling off duty about 8.15pm on February 4.

Police said Wollongong officers attended and spoke to the driver, who was uninjured.

She was subject to a roadside breath test, which allegedly returned a positive reading of .196 – nearly four times the legal limit.

The woman – who police revealed is a Southern Region command sergeant – was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where a second breath analysis confirmed the positive result.
