Missing woman Qi Yu: Berowra community go bush to help

COMMUNITY members in Berowra have joined the search for Chinese woman Qi Yu who went missing nearly three weeks ago.

EXCLUSIVE: Community members in Berowra have joined the search for Chinese woman Qi Yu who went missing nearly three weeks ago.

Ms Yu, 28, who was living in Campsie, last spoke to her family in China on the night of Friday, June 8 and has not been heard from since.

Police believe she was taken in her white Toyota Corolla hatchback to the Berowra area on the night she went missing. The car was later found dumped in Burwood.

Her 19-year-old housemate, Shou Dong, has been arrested and charged with murder but is reportedly not co-operating with police.

Her parents have flown to Australia and tearfully asked the public to help find their daughter.

They handed out missing person flyers during a press conference on Tuesday.

However, police said the likelihood of finding Ms Yu alive was “non-existent” so long after she went missing.

Berowra Heights resident Gary Evans said police had knocked on doors along his street asking if residents had seen anything suspicious during the night of June 8.

He added a large number of police and SES spent two days near his home on Lonsdale Avenue last week searching through bushland, including carrying shovels into the bush.

“Police told us they were 95 per cent sure she was somewhere in the bushland behind Lonsdale.”

He said he knew the bushland well, having lived in the area for decades, and had since searched some of the tracks with his son.

“Some people have been saying you should not interfere but my response has been the police are asking for help and the mum is asking for help.”

Mr Evans said he also encouraged others to do the same.

“I would feel a good sense of reward to say to the mum we have got your daughter back.”

Campsie police said they thanked those locals who knew the area and were out helping search for Ms Yu.

Ms Yu’s father Zhihe Yu spoke to media at Campsie police station on Tuesday and said he and his wife had visited the Ku-ring-gai National Park in search of their daughter.

“We are very grieving. Both of us cannot sleep every night,” he said. “My wife’s tears run dry.”
