Wisemans Ferry Golf Resort’s plan for surf facility

Sydney's first inland surf centre, which will generate waves on-demand in a massive 21,500sq m pool, will be built in the most unlikely of places.

Wisemans Ferry Retreat and Golf Club has revealed multimillion-dollar plans to attract surf enthusiasts to the Hawkesbury, proposing the creation of a huge surf facility that will use new wave-making technology at the nine-hole golf club on the banks of the Hawkesbury River on the outskirts of Sydney.

The wave pool will not impact the current golf course.

Planners behind the proposal submitted to The Hills Council on January 23, revealing water from the river will be drawn into the surf pool after being filtered.

“This application is proposed to enhance the facilities currently on offer at The Retreat at Wisemans which will serve as a drawcard for patrons of the motel facilities,” the planner said.

“The Retreat will become a Golf and Wave Hotel that will make a valuable contribution to the local economy, without altering or impacting upon the existing ambience, visitation potential, or aesthetic qualities of the site or Wisemans Ferry Village.”

The development application includes the installation of a large resort pool with no other alterations to the resort of golf club.

“The proposed pool is not accessible to the general public, but is for the use of guests to the retreat only,” the planner said.

“The current occupancy within the Wisemans Retreat Hotel is very low, due to the current condition of the motel and facilities.”

The Times understands the plans for the new wave facility comes from the new owners of the Wisemans Golf Resort.

Hills Mayor Michelle Byrne said a number of people have called for a beach to be built in The Hills.
“A wave pool at Wisemans Ferry would potentially go someway to meeting the desires of our youth as well as increasing tourisn in our rural regions,” she said. “However, when assessing a development application the that seeks to build upon the Hills Tourism industry, we need to ensure it fits into our ruyral area, taking into account the environmental constraints as well as the rural character of the area.”
