A $115 million vision to completely overhaul parts of the Sydney Opera House has been approved - including plans for what must be the world’s most scenic classroom.
The Sydney Opera House Trust submitted multimillion-dollar plans for major redevelopment work in the Australian landmark’s concert hall, including a complete redesign of the stage, increases in accessible seating, refurbished seating and an impressive Creative Learning Centre that overlooks Sydney Harbour.
A trust planner said the educational space, which would be complete for the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Opera House, would replace existing office space.
“For the first time, the Opera House will have a dedicated space for children and young people to experiment and learn in a building that embodies creativity and innovation,” the planner said. “Students, teachers and visitors will learn to collaborate in ways that foster creativity, problem-solving and innovative thinking.”
Work to build the new stage, make modifications to the concert hall and build the new Creative Learning Centre will take place from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays until February, 2022.
“Proposed works can be undertaken without any significant impact on the heritage values of the Sydney Opera House,” the planner said. “The proposed works are … essential to the Sydney Opera House’s ability to provide a world-class venue.”
Mr Stokes approved the development on December 12, with the project expected to see the creation of 300 construction jobs and up to 270 operation jobs.
“The Sydney Opera House is a national treasure,” he said.
“This redevelopment will ensure it stands the test of time for centuries to come.”
