Why I love my suburb is a new series written by Sydneysiders. Performer Barry Conrad who stars in Madiba the Musical shares why he likes to escape home to Kellyville.

When did you move to this suburb?

I moved to Kellyville back in 2005, because we were living all the way up in Kurrajong Heights. Basically, too far from everything (ha ha).

What do you like most about living there?

So much of my life and what I do is fast-paced. And if I’m not travelling it’s mostly out in the city. It’s nice then to escape and recharge back in the suburbs. Mine is chilled and super family-friendly. Plus, it’s where my barber is, which is important!

  • What do you enjoy doing on the weekend?

If I’m not working, I’ll head to the park around the corner and do an outdoor workout and hill sprints, or pop into my local Anytime Fitness. After that, I’ll hit my favourite cafes for a big breakfast and catch up with mates. I also love running from Bondi to Bronte (or the Coogee Stairs) and finishing off with a dip in the ocean.

What is your favourite cafe/restaurant/bar and why?

My favourite local cafe is easily Blends & Brothers. It’s part cafe, part barber. So I’ll have my long black coffee while I wait, get a fresh fade, and then finish off with a nice big breakfast. Delicious food and coffee, such an ace vibe and my favourite barbering in Sydney!

What is your best memory from living in this area?

Hosting and performing at The Annual Lighting of the Tree Ceremony at Rouse Hill Town Centre. Such a great night.

Do you have a favourite park or outdoor space and if so why?

I have a park nearby that I run up to and chill out at after doing some hill sprints.

What do you wish you could change about your suburb?

Probably improve public transport (which they’re actually doing now).

What do you tell other people about your suburb?

Exactly what I’ve told you guys: that it’s relaxing, family-friendly and just a good break from hectic work/travel.

What is the best thing that your suburb offers you?

Because I live such a nomadic life and am away from my family (they’re in NZ), it gives me a sense of feeling grounded.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experiences living in this area?

Check it out, it’s definitely worth the visit.

Madiba The Musical opens at the State Theatre on November 1.
