When Lachlan Compton’s grandmother gave him a football for his fifth birthday, little did she know it would spark a longstanding love of the game.

Lachlan, of North Rocks, has played football ever since, joining his local club at seven and Football Development Australia at nine. He now trains three days a week with FDA and also plays basketball and football for his school, Oakhill College.

Lachlan has also developed his football skills overseas, attending his first international trip to Germany with FDA in 2012.

“Going to Germany with FDA was an incredible experience and something I will never forget,” he said. “I returned to Germany in 2014 to further improve my skills and was lucky enough to train with their youth squad.

“The Wolfsburg youth squad trains twice a day, five days week and seeing their skills, speed and agility was a great experience.”

Next month, Lachlan will travel to the US with FDA to compete in the Surf College Cup in San Diego and the Dallas Collegiate Showcase tournament.

“Each tournament goes for a week and involves some of the best youth players in the US,” Lachlan said.

“It will be a great test of our skill against a variety of top US teams.”

This year Lachlan began helping with training the U8 FDA squad, and said he hoped to continue coaching in the future.

“I really enjoy passing on my knowledge to others,” he said.

“Coaching is something I’m really interested in.

“My coach, Cormac Begley, has taught me everything I know about football and is someone I look up to and admire.”
