Cherrybrook: Hills Police catch motorcyclist reaching 138km/h on Anzac Day

A 19-year-old learner motorcyclist reached 138km/h in an attempt to evade police in Sydney’s north west.

A 19-year-old learner motorcyclist has been caught after reaching extreme speeds in an attempt to evade police on Anzac Day.

The rider was travelling at 80km in a 60km zone when police attempted to stop them at 11:45pm on Showground Road at Castle Hill.

Police allege the Yamaha “changed gears” and zipped to 138km/h with officers in chase.

The learner rider, from Cherrybrook, was stopped and told police “I didn’t know I was going that fast”.

He tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Crime Manager Detective Inspector Matt Harris said the circumstances around the incident were worrying.

“On Anzac Day, people are out and about coming home from events – nothing good can come of speeding,” Mr Harris said.

Mr Harris said numerous tests have been conducted showing the “considerable differences” in braking distance from even minor speeding.

“It could be the difference between serious injury or death,” he said.

Mr Harris said police investigate “too many serious incidents as it is”.

“We don’t want to see anyone involved in an accident – the rider is putting their life at risk and others. Pedestrians wouldn’t presume someone would be coming at such speeds and be alert to it,” Mr Harris said.

The rider was given an infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit above 45km/h and was stripped of his driver’s license on the spot for six months.

His motorcycle number plates were confiscated for three months.
