Principal Dr Gareth Leechman said the school’s thoughts and prayers were with the family and friends of the 34-year-old woman.

“We wish to advise the college community of the sad passing of Miss Karen Mitchell who was involved in a fatal car accident on Cattai Ridge Road yesterday afternoon,” he said in a statement to parents on Tuesday.

“Karen was a dedicated and caring science teacher and we know that the news of her passing will impact our staff and students greatly.

“Students have been advised of Karen’s passing and our counselling team will be offering support to students and staff as they grieve the loss of their teacher and friend. This support will be made available throughout this week.”

The 34-year-old teacher, who joined Arndell Anglican as a science teacher in January 2017, recently joined a Homes of Hope mission with students in Fiji, where she helped run classes at St Christopher’s orphanage in Suva.
