Annual New Zealand tour special experience for Northern Barbarians JRC

Following the tragedy in Christchurch, the annual rugby tour between Northern Barbarians Junior Rugby Club and the small New Zealand farming town of Ruawai is a shining reminder of the truly special relationship which exists between the two countries.

“The tour started 39 years ago and came about as a way of driving numbers in the younger age groups,” club president Adam Muir said.

“(It also) provided the players who toured with an experience of travelling overseas.”

Since then however, the tour has blossomed into something which means much more than just driving participation numbers.

“The tradition of this tour is hugely important for both clubs,” Muir said.

“The tour is not just about the game of rugby but it’s more about the lifelong friendships that are created.

“The way the Ruawai community welcome us on arrival is something to be experienced.

“They will place a sign up in the middle of town letting everyone know that the ‘Aussies are coming’ and on game day the whole town (all 400 of them) comes down to watch and support both teams.

“Prior to kick off we sing the national anthems which is then followed by the Kiwi players doing the Haka, something only a few rugby players ever get to experience.

“It provides a life experience the kids wouldn’t normally get here in Australia.”

The annual tour has been running for 39 years straight.

This year’s tour will see Ruawai come to Australia in April, with a match against the Barbarians under-10s and under-11s at Pennant Hills Oval on Monday, April 15.

Muir urges people to get out to the game and experience something that goes far beyond the game of rugby union.

“The tour is about friendship within the team and with the boys and girls across the ditch and providing our players with a memory that will stay with them forever.”
