With the popularity of women’s rugby sevens reaching a fever pitch in recent years, Barker College and the University of Sydney have teamed up to help develop the next generation of female rugby sevens stars.
From next month, Barker will run the University of Sydney’s junior academy program and the college will act as a feeder for the university’s Women’s Uni 7s team.
The program will involve specialised training at Barker College twice a week with the participants able to continue to compete for their own club or join the University of Sydney’s extended women’s sevens squad.
Director of Girls Sport for Barker College Ali Cox said the partnership was a huge step forward for the grassroots development of women’s rugby sevens.
“This partnership provides an exciting opportunity for girls to not only be involved in a high performance program, but concurrently focus this within an environment that delivers a holistic approach to their overall development,” Ms Cox said.
“All within a supportive setting that allows students to thrive both on the sports field and with their ongoing studies.”
Trials for the junior academy program will be held at Barker College from 9am-12.30pm on Sunday, March 31.
