A TRUCKIE whose vehicle was loaded precariously with a haphazard stack of wrecked cars has created his own accident after rear-ending a woman’s vehicle in Sydney’s southwest.
The man has been charged with following a vehicle too closely to stop safely after he rear-ended the 62-year-old woman’s 4WD on the Hume Hwy in Lansdowne at 11.40am on March 15.
The woman was trapped in the vehicle and treated for back and neck pain before she was transported to Liverpool Hospital for further treatment.
The male driver, who owns the truck, has also been charged with driving a dangerously defective heavy vehicle, a substantial load breach and a severe dimension breach.
The truck was stacked with the twisted remains of two vans and a ute, one of which rested on the roof of the truck’s body.
Traffic and Highway Patrol images show three straps restraining the vehicles were dangerously worn.
“The most serious defect was inoperative brakes with a gap detected between the brake shoe and drum detected where no gap should be present,” the command wrote on Facebook.
“Major oil and hydraulic leaks were also detected with a red label fixed to the vehicle and defect issued.”
The truck was fully assessed at the Wetherill Park Heavy Vehicle Inspection Scheme.
The driver will face Fairfield Local Court in May.
Traffic and Highway Patrol thanked Fairfield PAC Highway Patrol for their assistance.
It was the conclusion to a horror week on southwest Sydney roads.
Dramatic sound from a security camera captured the moment a desperate mother shouted “wait for us” before her little girl walked into oncoming traffic and was hit by a van at Smithfield on Tuesday.
Heartbreaking screams can then be heard from the parents who had parked their car on Horsley Rd near Justin St, opposite a doctor’s surgery where they were heading.
The six-year-old sustained critical head injuries and was placed in an induced coma and remains in a serious but stable condition at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Acting Superintendent Craig Ireland said the 55-year-old male driver of the van was very upset by the incident.
“It appears the girl has stepped out straight into the traffic,” Act Supt Ireland said.
“There was nothing the driver could do.”
In yet another accident a teenage boy was hit by a car in Canley Heights on Thursday.
Emergency services were called to Avoca Rd just before 4pm where they located the injured teen lying on the road.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics for multiple abrasions and a possible head injury before he was taken to hospital.
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and provided assistance.
