DRAMATIC sound from a security camera has captured the moment a desperate mother shouts “wait for us” before her little girl walks into oncoming traffic and is hit by a van at Smithfield on Tuesday.
Heartbreaking screams can then be heard from the parents who had parked their car on Horsley Rd near Justin St, opposite a doctor’s surgery where they were heading.
The six-year-old sustained critical head injuries and was placed in an induced coma and remains in a serious but stable condition at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Acting Superintendent Craig Ireland said the 55-year-old male driver of the van was very upset by the incident.
“It appears the girl has stepped out straight into the traffic,” Act Supt Ireland said.
“There was nothing the driver could do.”

Fairfield police have said it is unlikely the man will be charged.
The girl was unconscious from the time she was struck until she was placed in an induced coma and intubated at the scene by CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic.
NSW Paramedics provided initial treatment until CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter arrived at the accident scene after four minutes’ flying time.
