Coronavirus: Two confirmed virus cases die in Liverpool Hospital

Two men who tested positive for COVID-19 have died in Liverpool Hospital. The deaths come as the number of cases across the region has risen.

Two men being treated for COVID-19 at Liverpool have died, taking the NSW death toll to 18, health authorities confirmed on Monday.

An 86-year-old man who tested positive for the infection died in Liverpool Hospital. He was a resident of Opal Care Bankstown aged care facility.

A statement from NSW Health on Monday said there were now five cases — two residents and three staff — associated with the facility.

A second man, 85, confirmed to have COVID-19 also died in Liverpool Hospital. He was a close contact of another confirmed case.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in NSW has risen to 2637, with 249 people being treated by NSW Health.

Forty people are in intensive care units, 22 of whom require ventilators.

There are 133 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sydney’s southwest as of Saturday night.

Canterbury-Bankstown has the highest caseload with 81 cases, followed by Liverpool with 34 and Fairfield with 18.

NSW Health figures show at least 20 of those cases were locally acquired infections without a known source of infection.
