A pastry shop owner who had his family-owned business targeted by a hooded man has spoken out after a register and mobile phone were stolen in an early morning attack.

Gato’s Pastizzi on The Horsley Dr, Carramar in Sydney’s southwest was allegedly broken into on January 13 at 4am after a man used a crowbar to smash open the front glassdoor and stole a mobile phone, the register and a sum of cash.

CCTV footage showed the man busted open the front door before he crawled through the glass to go behind the front counter and ran off with the register.

Gato’s Pastizzi owner, Phillip Raish said he received a text message from his security company on Saturday warning him of the break-in.

“He took the till and he came back to collect his cap and to clean up blood because he cut himself when he broke in, then took the mobile phone,” he said.

Despite losing the electronics, Mr Raish said the 44-year-old business lost more money in sales from closing the shop until 11am on Saturday to clean up.

“We lost two days of production and that really hurt us because we deliver to supermarkets and we were pushed back into Wednesday,” he said.

“We had to bring all the furniture into the carpark and disinfect everything and we had to use a calculator all day before we bought a new register for Monday.”

Mr Raish said he refused to close his business following the incident as he “didn’t want to let down” his loyal customers of more than 40 years.

“We had client orders and were going to let down a lot of people if we didn’t open,” he said.

“The business is 44-years-old so for a lot of our elderly clients who don’t follow social media they wouldn’t know and it’s their big day out to come in for a pastry and coffee.”

Mr Raish said business was back to normal and encouraged the community to ‘come down and try and pastizzi’.

NSW Police confirmed a 41-year-old man was arrested in Bass Hill on Monday and he was taken to Bankstown Police station and charged with two counts of break and enter steal value equal or less than $60,000.

He was refused bail to appear in Bankstown Local Court on January 30.
