A man has come clean on his crime nearly three years after assaulting an online seller in a Prospect car park before robbing him of $20,000.
Christian Burgess Spratt, 48, was due to face trial in the District Court on Tuesday but his lawyer, David Moen told the court a resolution had been reached with prosecution.
Spratt, of Semaphore, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, admitting he committed the offence while in company with another person.
The court heard the second circumstance of aggravation – that an offensive weapon was used – was no longer being proceeded with by prosecution.
Police allege just after 11pm on February 10, 2021, a man agreed to meet another man in the Northpark Shopping Centre on Main North Road, Prospect, to buy electrical items.
Spratt and another man approached the seller who was allegedly hit in the legs and shoulder with a hammer before the pair used force to steal his backpack which contained $20,000.
The victim was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and treated for leg and shoulder injuries.
The incident prompted a warning from police to always consider their personal safety when meeting with strangers from online.
“Always meet in a public space that you are familiar with and preferably during the day,” a police spokesperson said.
“Get the person’s name, phone number and email contact, and tell at least one person where you are and who you are with.”
On Tuesday, Judge Paul Muscat ordered a home detention compliance report and adjourned the charge until May for sentencing submissions.
