Scammers seeking to cash in on the tragic death of two children have forced a former X-Factor contestant to flee his home.

Country music singer Jason Owen says he’s received calls from scammers claiming to know where he lives and pressuring him to keep quite about their attempts to dupe people into donating money meant to go to the families of Wellington crash victims Shane and Sheldon Shorey.

The boys were killed after a car ploughed into a group they were walking with last month and to help out survivors and grieving families, Mr Owen used his official Facebook page and charity Doin It for Rural Aussie Kids to raise funds.

A police investigation was launched after fake Facebook accounts, appealing for donations to bank accounts not connected with legitimate fundraisers, were created under the name “Jason Owen”.

Mr Owen spoke out about the scammers and now he claims they’ve come after him and his fans.

“It just got out of control, people were receiving messages from scammers using the same profile picture as mine, the same cover photo on Facebook, absolutely everything right down to a tee,” he said.

“Recently I’ve started to get threatening phone calls and inboxes to myself.

“After I received threatening messages saying they know where I live and they’re going to come for me if I don’t call the police off the case and all this type of stuff, I was advised to leave home for safety reasons.”

Fearing for their safety, Mr Owen and his fiancee Becy Harvey left their home on the NSW central coast on Friday.

“My fiancee was absolutely beside herself over this because we’re trying to plan a wedding at the same time.

“We pretty much fled the central coast... we don’t know where we’ll go next. It’s a scary thought, you just don’t know what these guys are capable of doing or who they are.”

Mr Owen said he feared people would stop donating to his charity because of confusion about where to legitimately donate.

“I had to go back to the police to report this, no one wants to have to that but you’ve got to do it to protect yourself.

“It’s quite scary thinking these guys could be bluffing, but there’s a good chance they’re not if they can get information and use my charity details and all this type of stuff to scam from people then how do you know they don’t know where you live.

“We want people to donate, we want people to know that this is not us scamming. The only place to donate is through our website, I’ll never inbox people asking people to donate.”
