The devastated mum of two boys killed in a horrific crash has opened up about the pain of losing her sons.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A mother whose two sons were tragically killed in a horror crash has gathered at one of their favourite parks with family and friends to celebrate one of the boy’s birthdays.

Shayleen Frail, 34, is still recovering after she was badly injured in the crash at Wellington in NSW on January 5 which claimed the lives of Shane, 7 and Sheldon Shorey, 6.

Ms Frail and her boys, along with two other children, were walking along Warne Street when an out-of-control car ran into them.

Sheldon’s 7th birthday was on Friday and to celebrate his life, Ms Frail said the family chose to have a barbecue and release balloons at Cameron Park.

“It was mum’s idea because I was in hospital when Shane’s birthday was on three days after the accident,” she said.

“I just want to thank everyone for their support.

“It lets me know that my babies aren’t forgotten and they’re not only loved by me and my parents, but they’re loved by their cousins and their aunts and uncles and the wider community.”

The pain of losing Shane and Sheldon was yet to fully sink in, Ms Frail said.

“It still hasn’t even been processed.

“It’s still all raw, it still only seems like last week that I lost them.

“It was really hard when I first was told about it, some of it’s still blurry.”

Ms Frail said the boys were happy in their final days, visiting their Wellington family after travelling down from Emerald in Queensland where they were living with their father Joseph Shorey.

“Sheldon was always dancing, Shane always had a footy in his hand.

“They were happy being back home here in Wello, seeing all their old friends and family.”

Support received from family and the community had been overwhelming, Ms Frail said.

“If I didn’t have them I’d be absolutely lost. I think I would have went off track.

“I’ve had so many messages from so many people, it’s so hard to get back to everyone.

“It means the world to me.”

Ms Frail said despite a broken ankle and leg which needed surgery, she was expected to make a full recovery.

Funeral arrangements for Shane and Sheldon are yet to be made, but Ms Frail is determined to have the boys buried in Wellington.

Mr Shorey wants the boys to be cremated and the disagreement has led Ms Frail to start Supreme Court proceedings.

A hearing will be held on February 17 to resolve the issue and allow the boys to be laid to rest.

Wellington man Jacob Donn, 25, was arrested on the night of the crash and charged dangerous driving causing death and various other offences.

He has been refused bail and entered no pleas, with the case due to return to court next month.
