Taronga Western Plains Zoo has revealed its latest plans to expand the much-loved tourism attraction while highlighting the importance of animal conservation.
The zoo has lodged plans for a $797,940 giraffe breeding area to Dubbo Regional Council, along with associated paddocks to support the long-necked animals.
Planning documents state the proposed development will support the zoo’s goal of protecting and educating the public on conservation practices.
“The Taronga Western Plains Zoo is recognised as a major tourist facility for the city of Dubbo, it provides a base for important zoological research and animal conservation to be undertaken as well as providing economic benefits for the city of Dubbo and wider region by being an eminent tourist attraction,” the planner said.
“The proposal shall further complement and enhance the existing Taronga Western Plains Zoo as it will support its’ current exhibits, by providing suitable new areas for a key animal of the zoo.”
Plans state the development will provide a positive social and economic benefit to the community and is not anticipated to generate any adverse impacts to the site.
The planner said the “modern” and “unique” facility would encourage tourism and animal conservation in Dubbo and across the region.
