A 64-year-old paedophile who preyed on three young girls, including his own granddaughter, has been jailed for 11 years but he could become eligible for parole after slightly more than five years.

Details of the man’s shocking crimes were laid bare by Judge Nanette Williams when he was sentenced him in the District Court at Dubbo on Monday.

The man cannot be identified to protect his victims.

Judge Williams said the man, who cannot be named because of a non-publication order imposed by the court, pleaded guilty to more than a dozen child sex crime charges, which included 10 counts of intentionally sexually touch child under 10 and two counts of sexual intercourse with child under 10.

The court heard the man’s first victim was a girl aged 8 or 9, who was the daughter of one of the man’s friends.

Sometime between 2013 and 2015, while the man was at his friend’s house in the town of Warren, watching football, he walked to the rear of the home and touched the girl’s breast as she was drawing.

“Does this feel good,” the man said.

The girl fled to the front of the house and the man was convicted of indecently assaulting her after a police found out about the incident following an investigation into reports the man targeted another two girls on multiple occasions in 2019.

Judge Williams told the court one of girls targeted in 2019 was the man’s six-year-old granddaughter and the other was a seven-year-old girl.

At various times in his backyard, loungeroom and driveway, the man gave the girls lollies he purchased after they agreed to expose themselves to him.

The court heard the man pulled the girls’ pants down on one occasion and used his hands to touch them. On other occasions he touched the girls while they had their clothes on.

Judge Williams said the man’s behaviour escalated on July 20, 2019, after he drove with granddaughter from Nevertire to Warren and touched her.

The details of some of his actions are too graphic to publish.

Despite being confronted by his granddaughter’s mother, the man again engaged in a sex act with his granddaughter in his loungeroom.

Police arrested the man in August 2019 and he has been remanded in custody since.

In a letter to the court, the man described his behaviour as “irresponsible”.

“I understand this is a serious offence which I will never repeat,” he said.

“I am so disgusted for what I have done to the girls, it makes me sick to the stomach just thinking about it.”

Judge Williams said medical experts said the man suffered from alcohol use disorder and gambling use disorder, as well as type 2 diabetes.

Citing those conditions and the man’s age as something which could make his time in custody more onerous, Judge Williams made a finding of special circumstances and handed the man a longer period of parole.

“The offender admitted to having sexual fantasies about the victims in preceding weeks,” Judge Williams told the court.

“The offender has demonstrated a lack of understanding about sexual norms in a civilised society, particularly around the age of consent.”

Judge Williams said the man showed “a staggering boldness and complete disregard for the fact his criminal behaviour had been exposed” when he continued to prey on his granddaughter after being caught by her mother.

After the man’s crimes became known, the court heard the mother regularly struggled to eat and blamed herself for not protecting her daughter who now fears sleeping in her own bed, wets herself every night and blames herself for the sexual abuse.

Judge Williams said the man was entitled to a 25 per cent sentencing discount for pleading guilty early and another five per cent for “full and frank”co-operation with police.

He was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in jail, with a non-parole period of six years and six months.

With time already served taken into account, the man could be eligible for parole in May 2026.
