A woman has been sentenced after pleading guilty to taking part in the supply of a prohibited drug after police stopped a package addressed to her former home in the small town of Trangie.

In court documents, police said Lisa Marie Thompson’s former home address came to the attention of Wellington jail staff in November last year when an inmate was heard on the phone asking another inmate what Trangie’s postcode was.

According to police, the man who was asked about the postcode was well known to Thompson and further telephone conversations between the pair were intercepted.

Thompson and the man were heard discussing a package, with the man telling Thompson “you’re getting the thing sent to you in Express Post … it’s in your name but it’s terrors you know”.

After further calls between people inside and outside the jail were intercepted, police visited the Trangie Post Office on December 4 and opened a package addressed to Thompson.

Inside was a small white envelope with a message which said “There’s 20 8, 10 2” and was drug user code for 20 eight milligram strips of buprenorphine and 10 two milligram strips of the prohibited drug which has soared in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On December 11 police turned up at Thompson’s door and told her the package had been seized.

She admitted to knowing about the package and gave permission for police to take photos of messages sent between her and another woman who was in a relationship with the inmate who initially raised suspicions when he asked about Trangie’s postcode.

Thompson denied knowing how the bupe strips were going to get into Wellington jail, however police alleged she, two inmates and another woman took part in the supply of the drugs.

If the 30 bupe strips got into the jail police estimate they would have been worth $36,000 to whoever sold them.

On March 12 in Blacktown Local Court Thompson was convicted and sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order.
