Thieves who targeted bowling clubs in Dubbo and Yeoval have faced court after admitting all they got away were coins from a chocolate vending machine.

Police slapped Wellington men Timothy Ahsee, 30 and Taylor Mohr, 34, with two aggravated break and enter charges after the pair were caught driving around Dubbo with camouflage style raincoats on their laps.

In court documents, police said Ahsee and Mohr were caught on camera breaking in to the Yeoval Bowling Club in the early hours of March 13 last year.

To avoid getting caught, the pair used crowbars to move security cameras in the direction of the ground.

The crowbars were also used to enter the building and smash up an ATM which Ahsee and Mohr were unable to open.

Police said after Ahsee and Mohr failed to get cash from the ATM, the pair used the crowbars to take an unknown quantity of coins from a chocolate vending machine.

When an alarm went off Ahsee and Mohr fled the scene, however four days later the thieves targeted the Macquarie Club in Dubbo.

Police said Ahsee and Mohr were caught on camera again wearing camouflage-style raincoats and armed with a crowbar as they tried to break in to the club.

Minutes after the pair failed to force their way in, police spotted them opposite the Dubbo RSL Club with raincoats, a hand trolley, blue crowbar and tools inside their car.

In Dubbo Local Court on Thursday the pair pleaded guilty to the aggravated break and enter charges.

Mohr’s case was adjourned to a date in March for sentencing, while Ahsee narrowly avoided time behind bars.

Ahsee’s defence lawyer Self Rumbewas said his client was on parole when the bowling clubs were targeted and had a history of trauma in childhood and drug abuse.

“They’re certainly not victimless crimes but that said, each of the offences when you look at them objectively do not involve the presence of persons at the different two businesses,” Mr Rumbewas said.

“He’s on the methadone program.”

Mr Rumbewas said a report tendered in court suggested Ahsee had a mental health condition and community safety would be more likely achieved if he had good access to support services in the community.

Magistrate Theresa Hamilton said a report which concluded Ahsee was a high risk of reoffending was “probably fairly accurate”.

“It does appear that he has had some unresolved mental health issues and of course some drug abuse problems which have not always been treated,” she said.

“He has not always, it appears, co-operated with ongoing treatment.”

After taking into account Ahsee’s background, Magistrate Hamilton sentenced him to an 18-month term of imprisonment to be served in the community in the form of an intensive corrections order.
