A woman who ambushed her ex-partner’s girlfriend fronted court today, charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm related to domestic violence.

Sedia Towney, 24, appeared in Dubbo Local Court, pleading guilty to the charge following an attack on June 16, 2021.

The victim was shopping at Dubbo Square Shopping Centre on Macquarie Street with her mum.

The victim received a call from her partner saying Towney sent him a message saying “I can see (the victim) at Coles, I’m going to bash her“, the court heard.

A short time later, when the victim attempted to get into the front passenger seat of a car, Towney walked up, grabbed her and pulled her hair “with force”.

After pulling the victim away from the car, Towney kept ahold of her hair, and began “striking” with punches and slaps.

“Several of these struck the victim in the head and face, causing minor swelling and redness to the right cheek and several scratches around the right eye,” agreed facts state.

“(Towney) also punched the victim in the side, causing minor bruising.

“While doing this, the accused was saying words like ‘You c**t. I’ll teach you to take my man’.”

In seeing the attack unfold, the victim’s mother tried to intervene, placing herself in between the pair.

Towney continued to “strike at the victim”.

“The victim attempted to defend herself by pushing the accused, causing a small scratch under the accused’s eye,” documents tendered to the court said.

The victim took photos of the injuries and contacted police.

The victim did not recognise Towney as they had never met.

Towney’s lawyer Molly Bland said the victim’s swelling was minor, with the incident falling into the low range of objective seriousness.

Ms Bland said her client was out of control.

She said the defendant had was having effects from giving birth two weeks prior.

Ms Bland appealed for a sentence without conviction, pointing towards her client’s clean record.

She explained that the attack happened almost one year ago and Towney’s conduct since then was indicative of her being able to stay away from the criminal justice system.

Magistrate Mal MacPherson handed Towney a 12-month conditional release order without conviction.
