A man fled the scene of an attempted murder in Broken Hill before a house fire the next day led investigators to their suspect, police allege.

Jeramy Kemp, 43, appeared shirtless via audio visual link from Broken Hill Police station in Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday.

A NSW Police statement reports a 40-year-old woman remains in a serious but stable condition with significant head injuries after an alleged assault by Kemp, who police could not find.

Emergency services were called to Argent Street at 9.45pm on May 28, where the woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Broken Hill Hospital and later Royal Adelaide Hospital.

About 3.45am the next morning, officers went to a home on Jamieson Street following reports of a fire.

The fire was extinguished a short time later but the home was significantly damaged.

Kemp was arrested and taken to Broken Hill Police Station, before being transferred to Broken Hill Base Hospital for treatment.

“(Kemp) was released from hospital yesterday and taken to Broken Hill Police Station, where he was charged with nine offences including attempted murder, wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, damage property with intent to endanger life, armed with intent, common assault, and intimidation,” the statement read.

Documents tendered to Dubbo Local Court reveal Kemp was armed with a machete “with intent to destroy or damage property (and) intent to endanger life”.

It continued, saying Kemp “did wound (the victim) with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” police facts state.

The court heard from Kemp’s lawyer Ms Hazleton that they will be seeking an adjournment until Thursday to find an appropriate address for a release application.

As a result, the sitting registrar formally denied bail with Kemp due to be taken to Broken Hill Correctional Centre where he will appear by audio visual link for his bail application at 9.30am on Thursday.
