Vaccination rates for aged care staff at every nursing home across Dubbo region and western NSW have been revealed.
The data has been published on the Australian Government’s Department of Health website and it shows the percentage of staff at nursing homes across the country who have had at least one dose of a vaccine to protect against Covid.
Aged care centres are racing against the clock to increase vaccination rates of its staff as western NSW experiences rising Covid numbers in the community.
On Monday, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro said there were 60 new cases in the 24 hours to 8pm Sunday.
A man in his 50s died in Dubbo Base Hospital, believed to be the first indigenous person in Australia to succumb to the virus. He had underlying health issues and had not received any dose of a vaccination.
While the department’s website states the data is updated each weekday by 5pm based on numbers providers are meant to report, some providers have claimed the information on the website is out of date and inaccurate.
According to the website, Catholic Healthcare’s Holy Spirit facility in Dubbo had between 30 to 39 per cent of its staff vaccinated as at August 13.
However a Catholic Healthcare spokesman said the rate of vaccination for that facility was 95.8 per cent on August 26 and the website had not been updated to reflect the change.
Similarly the website states Catholic Healthcare’s St Mary’s Villa facility in Dubbo had a 40 to 49 per cent staff vaccination rate as at August 13.
On August 26 the organisation claimed the rate was 100 per cent.
“Catholic Healthcare has been working very closely with local health services in Dubbo to ensure all residents and staff have been able to access Covid-19 vaccinations, including running on-site clinics,” a Catholic Healthcare spokesman said.
“The information on the government’s website in this instance doesn’t accurately reflect recent staff vaccination clinics. Catholic Healthcare will be liaising with the federal government to ensure current figures are updated on their website … the health and safety of our residents and staff is our highest priority.”
Clint Grose, the managing director of Orana Gardens Lodge in Dubbo, said providers were told several months ago that they would be required to report their staff vaccination rates to the Department of Health every week.
“These figures are changing daily with the availability of more vaccines to our local area,” he said.
A Department of Health spokeswoman said the vaccination rate data website was launched on August 22 and she suggested if information displayed on a map on the website was wrong, it was because the aged care providers had not told the government about increasing vaccination uptake by staff.
“As of August 25, the map will be updated each weekday by 5pm, it will reflect any updated data submitted by providers over the past 24 hours on workforce vaccination rates,” she said.
“All residential aged care providers are required to report on the status of their workforce Covid-19 vaccination on a weekly basis every Tuesday via the My Aged Care portal. “However, all providers are encouraged to update their data within 24 hours following an on-site vaccination clinic or workers attending off-site clinics where significant changes in vaccination rates occur in between reporting periods.
“The publication of the data prompted some facilities which had not updated their information recently, to do so.”
