A Trangie man allegedly armed himself with a metal pole before he “threatened to kill everyone” at a bowling club in the state’s central west, a court has heard.

Corey Artery, 27, appeared in Narromine Local Court on Tuesday after he was arrested about 8.40pm on November 4.

He was subsequently charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, excluded person remain in vicinity of licensed premises and excluded person fail to leave premises when required.

Police will allege in court that on the same day as his arrest between 7.20pm and 7.45pm, Artery “became very intoxicated at Trangie Bowling Club” and was told to leave the premises.

After being “shepherded out” he is alleged to have “picked up a pole” and threatened to kill people before he was arrested and later released on police bail.

On Tuesday, Artery’s lawyer Fiona Alamyar did not enter a plea on her client’s behalf, however submitted a bail variation after her client was prohibited from entering licensed premises in the Narromine Local Government area.

Ms Alamyar told the court Artery has since relied on his friends buying groceries for him and she was seeking for his bail conditions to be varied so he would be allowed to enter Trangie’s IGA.

Police prosecutor sergeant Michelle Bartlett offered a “remedy” to Artery’s current situation, saying the condition could be amended to prohibit the 27-year-old from every licensed premises except the IGA.

In continuing her submissions, Ms Alamyar said her client’s “only social outlet” was playing bowls and she would be asking for Artery to be allowed to enter Narromine Bowling Club “for the purposes of playing lawn bowls”.

However, Ms Bartlett opposed the request saying it is “entirely appropriate to [ban] him from going” to any bowling club.

“He [allegedly] armed himself with a metal pole and threatened to kill everyone there,” Ms Bartlett said.

In reply, Ms Alamyar said her client should be “afforded” the chance to play bowls, highlighting her client’s “blemishless [criminal] history”.

Magistrate Stephen Barlow formed the view bail conditions could be “tailored” to allow Artery to play bowls “if you are allowed” to join Narromine Bowling Club.

“That is if he is sober … the risk of committing further offences can be drastically reduced,” Magistrate Barlow said.

“You might want to think about [your relationship with] alcohol going forward.”
