A Dubbo man who got naked in his front yard and was frothing at the mouth fronted court on Thursday, charged with multiple offences.
Bradley Dunn, 39, appeared in Dubbo Local Court and pleaded guilty to five charges in two separate matters which included exposing himself in the view of a public place, drug possession, larceny, driving an uninsured vehicle and an unregistered vehicle.
Documents tendered to court reveal Dunn was arrested on January 25 after officers were called due to reports of Dunn appearing heavily intoxicated when he was attempting to get into houses and roaming the streets.
A short time later police arrived at Dunn’s property to find him “completely naked, highly erratic and yelling incoherently from the front yard”.
“(Dunn) appeared to be seriously affected by drugs or alcohol as he was sweating profusely, extremely unsteady on his feet and when seated, frothing at his mouth and yelling and rambling,” agreed facts state.
Due to his level of inebriation, Dunn was placed under arrest for officers to investigate the alleged break and enter offences with paramedics called to the scene to give an assessment.
As Dunn‘s behaviour was attracting the attention of neighbours and given that he was naked in his front yard, officers offered to enter his house and find some pants for him to wear. He gave verbal consent to the police.
In an effort to find clothing, officers entered a bedroom to find no furniture or clothing.
“Police observed there to be tin foil covering the window, numerous lights, electrical cords and power boards on the floor along with a fan which was facing the wardrobe and turned on,” documents reveal.
“The wardrobe double doors (were) both open and four large plants believed to be cannabis inside on the floor in large black pots. Hanging above them were three large lamps.”
Cops continued the search for pants, finding another bedroom with a bed and clothing inside, but once again there was a fan running, similar to the first room.
“On the floor inside the wardrobe were three large black pots each with an established plant believed to be cannabis and 10 smaller individual plants on top of them,” agreed facts state.
“There were approximately 6 lamps hanging directly above with a power board and six leads plugged into it.”
Police declared the residence a crime scene and cleared the property to make sure there were no other occupants.
Dunn was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital where he was sedated.
After receiving a warrant later in the evening, police seized 17 cannabis plants from 120cm to 10cm in height.
Eleven heat lamps, an inverter and bulb were also taken into evidence.
About 9.30pm the same night, police were advised that Dunn was medically cleared and he was conveyed to Dubbo police station.
When entered into custody, Dunn was questioned about a separate matter on October 21, 2021 where he picked up a six pack of Jim Beam and Coca-Cola cans worth $40 from the Westside bottle shop and proceeded to walk out of the shop saying to a worker, “cya later motherf****r”.
CCTV footage inside the shop depicts the incident.
Dunn then entered a white Ford Falcon and left the scene onto Whylandra St.
The worker tried to stop the car but they were unable to obtain a clear photo of its number plate.
However, construction workers further up the street noticed the attempts, and recorded the licence plate of Dunn’s vehicle which were provided to the witness.
A police check confirmed the owner of the vehicle to be Dunn, also revealing it was unregistered from the month before.
“The accused previously informed police hours before this incident that he was aware the vehicle’s registration had expired,” agreed facts state.
“Police viewed the licence photo of the accused which clearly matches the description of the accused as seen in the CCTV footage.”
During questioning, Dunn admitted to police that he was the only driver, recognising himself on the CCTV footage, though saying he did not remember stealing.
The court heard from Dunn’s lawyer, William Dickens, who said his client had developed a substance abuse problem, relating to the first matter.
“He tells me he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder,” Mr Dickens said.
“Both these incidents I think you can (say) he was in a manic state.
“In January, he was well-inebriated and in his words, he was on a bender.”
Mr Dickens said Dunn was deeply embarrassed for his actions and in a way to address this, he jumped at the opportunity to enter the MERIT program.
“He’s already commenced on a path to avail himself of the opportunities and assistance provided to him,” Mr Dickens continued.
In relation to the cannabis plants, Mr Dickens appealed to Magistrate Gary Wilson saying while there was a significant effort in growing them, it wasn’t a “significant” quantity.
He appealed for a community corrections order.
Magistrate Wilson accepted Dunn’s struggles with mental health, but convicted the 39-year-old for both matters.
Dunn was fined $250 for public indecency, entered into an 18-month community corrections order for drug possession and given a nine month conditional release order with conviction for the offence at the bottle shop.
