THE sun shone brightly as hospital patients were treated to a morning of lawn bowls as part of DoSomething Day.

The Randwick Bowls Club hosted the event with the Southern Courier pitching in to help out.

The annual DoSomething Day is run by DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club and challenges Australians to do something special and give back to the community.

The bowls club has been inviting the Prince of Wales Hospital’s easy breathing program and spinal injury unit for a day of bowls for 12 years.

Dorothy Nelson, 93, from South Coogee, has been each year.

“It’s a highlight of my year, I always look forward to it. Everyone is so friendly and it is lovely to spend time outside with my friends.”

Bill Butler, 81, came along as part of the easy breathing unit six years ago. He soon fell in love with lawn bowls and is now a member and the club’s welfare officer.

“It’s such a great event,” he said. “I came along and just really got into it. I now play competitively and have played twice in the state championships. It really has changed my life.”

On arrival, guests were treated to mid-morning sandwiches and snacks before they took to the lawns.

Members were on hand to show them the ropes and it wasn’t long before many were homing in on the jack.

One of those was Terry Lewis, who lost the use of his legs following an operation. He is currently in the hospital’s spinal ward and relished a day out of the hospital.

“On a day like today it’s just nice to get out the hospital for a while and get in the sun. The members have been great, I’ve really enjoyed it.”

For 82-year-old Lyn Prescott it was a chance to catch up with friends and have a natter.

“It’s a lovely occasion, I love coming here. We catch up and have a chat and play bowls. I’m not getting very close but I’ve had a great morning.”

For club president Vic Smith the event is an important date in the calendar.

“We are part of the community and it is really important that we are involved,” he said. “We really enjoy holding the event and everyone has a really good time.

After a morning of bowls guests and members retired to the club house for lunch before they said their goodbyes.
