EMPLOYEES of The Epping Club have helped prepare a garden, and planted the first of many fruit-bearing plants at the Karonga School at Epping as part of DoSomething Day.

The band of workers used rakes and other tools to prepare a patch in the school’s yard this morning.

The club has paid for about 50 plants which will form an olive grove and fruit orchard at the school, which caters to children with intellectual disabilities.

Club president David Taylor and general manager Peter Saez then joined principal Mark Gosbell in planting a mango tree.

The gardens are a small part of the $60,000 the club is providing to the school this financial year.

Most of this will go to the upgrading of outdoor sports courts, announced earlier, which have deteriorated over time.

Mr Taylor said he understood the value of the project as his sister was born deaf, and his brother was handicapped.

“It’s one of the most worthy projects we’ve undertaken,” he said.

“Whatever we can do, we will.”

Mr Gosbell said students will be able to pick the fruit and use it in the kitchen, or sell it at the school fair.

“We’ve planned it so the kids will be able to pick at all times of the year,” he said of the plants.

“It’s an opportunity to learn work and life skills.

“It’s not for every kid here, but it is an option.”
