COOKING bacon and egg rolls on a cold morning for those in need is the simplest meal former Masterchef contestant Courtney Roulston has put together in weeks but the impact is indescribable.
Club York teamed up with the Sydney Swans chef and Coles ambassador to serve a hot breakfast for clients of The Station Drop In Centre in Sydney on Thursday in the lead up to DoSomething Day.
Roulston said it was her way, along with these two organisations, of giving back to the community and making a difference.
“We all get caught up in our own privileged lives but it’s really nice to do something and give something back,” Roulston said.
“It is as simple as cooking some bacon and eggs but it brings such joy to the guys who have eaten it. It’s just such a small drop in the ocean for what ClubsNSW (a representative body providing news, promotions and events for registered clubs in NSW) and myself have done.
“A hot meal for someone who is freezing cold outside can make such a big difference. That’s what food does. Food can make people happy. And if there’s a bacon and egg roll at the end of it, I’m in.”
The Station provides a free breakfast and lunch seven days a week and offers a range of services in housing support, mental health and personal autonomy.
Club York runs a charity barbecue on the third Wednesday of each month, serving up a sausage sizzle and middy of beer or soft drink for $3.
Proceeds are donated to needy organisations including The Station and The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation to help fund research and clinical care.
Chief executive Rocky Massaria said Club York would hold its monthly barbecue lunch on July 19 to support DoSomething Day.
Do Something Day is Australia’s biggest celebration of volunteering in our communities, recognising the extraordinary contributions made by everyday locals.
It seeks to inspire people to make a difference and give back by volunteering, making a donation or carrying out a simple random act of kindness.
“It’s important to recognise that we’re not all fortunate and to identify that there are people out there that need some help,” Mr Massaria said.
“It’s great that we’re able to acknowledge that we do have problems and to do something for these people. You don’t have to be a big organisation to make a difference.
“Our participation in The Station event is only a small gesture that will contribute to highlighting the necessity to help those less fortunate in the community.”
Club York donated $1500 to The Station on June 29 as about 50 clients enjoyed a hot breakfast and porridge at the shelter.
While, the City of Sydney reported almost 400 people sleeping rough on the streets of Sydney in winter last year, it is organisations like The Station that are providing quality support to help reduce homelessness.
