DoSomething Day: GWS Giants give back to the community and promote random acts of kindness

THEIR diet may not include very many pies but the GWS Giants were only too happy to help bake a giant pie with the Sunrise team for DoSomething Day.

Although pies are a rare treat for the GWS Giants, players were only too happy to lend a helping hand to bake a giant pie ahead of DoSomething Day tomorrow.

Giants players Jarrod Pickett and Matthew Kennedy were joined by the Sunrise team at St Johns Park Bowling Club earlier this morning to bake a massive chicken and vegetable pie.

The club will be baking 600 sausage rolls and pies tomorrow to feed the homeless with the help of My Kitchen Rules alumni Sammy and Bella for DoSomething Day.

Launched by NewsLocal newspapers, the DoSomething charity and Your Local Club, DoSomething Day aims to encourage everybody to do something positive for their community.

St John’s Park Bowling Club marketing manager Debbie Hilder said the pies and sausage rolls would go towards Youth Off The Streets.

“We’re big supporters of Youth Off The Streets. Every day we deal with the general public and the local community and it’s not all about just giving them money so anything kind we can do is a bonus,” she said.

As well as lending a hand at the club’s Baking Room today, Pickett and Kennedy are often out and about in the community visiting schools and hospitals.

“It’s just a small act of kindness really. It doesn’t take too much out of our lives but it can make someone else’s so much better. I think it’s just about helping others. We’re very fortunate to get to do what we do,” Kennedy said.

It has been a busy few days for the Giants, who defeated the Sydney Swans on Sunday 105-63 — a massive feat for the young club.

“The Swans are a good side. They could be contenders this year for the premiership. If we can beat a quality side like that then we’re contenders as well,” Pickett said.

For Kennedy, 19, who has been with the club for one year, the victory was even sweeter.

“It just shows you how far the club’s come since day one. You hear stories of what it was like at the start when you were getting flogged every week by a hundred points plus and I think it’s just about building that culture from where we’ve come to now,” he said.

To take part in DoSomething Day, do something kind for a stranger or volunteer with a charity of your choice and share it on social media with #dosomethingday or #giveyourbest.
