EVERY Wednesday, the craft ladies at Blue Hills Village in Prestons gather for a cup of tea, knitting away as they socialise.
Over the past month, these afternoon craft sessions have been busier than usual as the women knit for a noble cause.
The group has taken up the challenge of making yellow and black poppies for the Invictus Games in Sydney later this year.
Each poppy will be given to a relative of an athlete as a memento of the 2018 Games.
In June, the NSW Central Council of RSL Auxiliaries put the call-out for 1290 poppies to be made ahead of the Invictus Games.
Pamela Lee, 80, a Blue Hills Village resident and organiser of the craft group, said the women had produced close to 700 poppies so far.
And they’ll “keep knitting until the wool’s gone”.
Ms Lee, who began knitting at the age of five, said it was a great cause.
“It gives you something to do. When you’re retired you’ve got a lot of time on your hands,” she laughed.
