DOSOMETHING Day took on special meaning today when Fitzy and Wippa, the loud and likeable presenters from Nova 96.9, took a Glen Alpine family under their wing to give them a treat to remember.
Fitzy and Wippa surprised Glen Smith, of Glen Alpine, and his five children Bailey, Taylor, Mia, Cooper and Hudson, all aged under 13, who have been doing it tough since losing their wife and mum Jackie to bowel cancer earlier this year.
Nova decided to give something back to the family so while Wippa and Fitzy were on air explaining to listeners about DoSomething Day and wanting to help out the Smith family, newsreader Matty de Groot ducked around to knock on the front door.
He put Glen on the phone to the announcers for a chat.
Glen told Wippa the family it had been a hard couple of months.
“Every day is just about making her (Jackie) proud and tick all the boxes she wanted us,” he said.
Fitzy told Glen: “It’s time to get out of the house because we want to look after you. It’s DoSomething Day.”
Nova arranged a white stretch Hummer to take the family to Luna Park for the day. But not before presenting Glen and the children with a $5000 cheque.
“Your Local Club, Campbelltown Golf Club at Glen Alpine, is giving you a $1000 bistro voucher — so you don’t need to cook this week — and another $5000 to use around the house or take the kids away,” Fitzy said.
Glen responded: “I’m speechless.”
An initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club, DoSomething Day seeks to celebrate our volunteers and highlight those who are giving back by spreading kindness in their community.
